Do it yourself: Surfboard wall mount

First we need at least one sheet of wood and some wood screws – depending on the type and thickness you use, it will cost around $20-30 bucks.

Second, we need some waxed cord or twine – this could also be reused from something like an old bungee cord so you don’t have to spend much at all there. You just want enough string to go up and over the top rung as well as down to meet back with itself where it overlaps at the bottom (double knot your string if you have to).

Make sure that the area is totally clear from any obstacles where you will be hanging this rack – nothing should be able to get in the way of running the string over and around the screws. Decide how long you want your rack to be, so basically cut your work piece of wood for this length x width. You should have something like this:

Once you’ve got your width and length, drill a hole right in the middle to be as close as possible to the center of gravity – you’ll see why later!

Now that we’ve got our screw holes drilled its time to attach it all together. Screw into one side at an angle about half way in, then turn it over and do the same on the other side.

Once you’ve got both sides attached to each’s adjacent side at an angle halfway in, attach them together so that there is a cross beam running all the way across. You’ll want this extra strength to hold your surfboard!

Note: Remember where you drilled the hole so you know where to attach it at the top!

Now you can go ahead and drill your screws where you want them – somewhere around this area will suffice. Or if you’re in a hurry then use bolts instead of screws for that authentic look, plus they are much easier to hang up on the wall!

Attach your board by running your waxed cord over the top back of the board, down to the bottom, then up again with a decent sized knot at either end. Set your board on its side so it will be easier to tie the knots – you’ll want them kind of loose so that your surfboard can still move freely. At this point you should have something around like this.

Nice, you’re almost there! Now all you got to do is measure how much cord or twine you’ll need to go up and around the top rung of your rack, then double knot it at either end so that it won’t slip. You can use a simple overhand knot right here:

Now just position your rack at the wall where you want it, drill in some screws or bolts with washers for extra holding power, and attach!

Once you’ve got all of this done you’ll be able to show off your cool wall decoration.
